FROM BEGINNING TO TODAY

WESTVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH STARTED DISTRIBUTING FOOD PARCELS IN CATO MANOR IN 1998. THE PROGRAMME THEN RAN IN PARTNERSHIP WITH A TEAM OF COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS BASED AT THE CATO MANOR CLINIC. JOHN MKHIZE WAS INVOLVED IN THIS PROGRAMME AS A REGULAR PREACHER AT MONTHLY FOOD PARCEL HANDOUTS.

BY 2009, WESTVILLE BAPTIST’S MINISTRIES WERE OPERATING UNDER THE NAME OF CAST AND WERE LOOKING FOIR CHURCH BASED PARTNERSHIP IN CATO MANOR. AT FIRST CAST ENGAGED IN THREE PARTNERSHIPS WITH CHURCHES IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF CATO MANOR. PARCELS WERE THEN DISTRIBUTED THROUGH THESE CHURCHES, WHO ALSO PROVIDED VOLUNTERY COMMUNITY WORKERS. OVER TIME IT BECAME CLEAR THAT THE MOST SUSTAINABLE LONG TERM RELATIONSHIP IN CATO MANOR WOULD BE MASIBAMBISANE CENTER.

ON THE 18TH OF MAY 2008 LIZZIE WAS ORDAINED AS A FULL TIME MINISTER WITH JOHN. FROM THE 12TH OF OCTOBER 2006 THEY STARTED DOING THE VCT CLINIC FROM THEIR HOME IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MATCH (ASSOCIATED TO WITS UNIVERSITY). ALL THIS TIME, ALL THE WORK WAS DONE ON A VOLUNTARY BASIS AND JOHN HAS CONTINUED TO REMAIN BUSY TEACHING IN VARIOUS COMMUNITIES ON HOW TO PLANT VEGETABLES.

LATE IN 2010, JEAN RAY KNIGHTON FITT (EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CAST) WAS APPROACHED BY A COUPLE WHO WISH TO MAKE A SUSTAINABLE FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION TO CAST. IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE MONEY WOULD BEST BE USED IN CATO MANOR TO SUPPORT THE WORK OF MASIBAMBISANE AND TAKE THE PARTNERSHIP TO A NEW LEVEL. CAST APPROACHED JOHN AND LIZZIE TO DISCUSS THE OPTION OF “JOINING FORCES” IN CATO MANOR. NOT MUCH DISCUSSION WAS NEEDED AS JOHN AND LIZZIE WERE OVER JOYED. LIZZIE JOINED THE CAST STAFF IN 2011 AS THE CO-ORDINATOR IN CAST MINISTRIES IN CATO MANOR.

ONE OF THE MAIN CHALLENGES AT MASIBAMBISANE OVER THE YEARS HAS BEEN THE SPACE ISSUE, AND SO CAST DECIDED TO INSTALL LARGE SHIPPING CONTAINER AS A BASE FOR THE COUNCILLING AND TESTING AS WELL AS A STORAGE FACILITY FOR DONATED GOODS. AS DONORS WERE BROUGHT ON BOARD, THIS PLAN QUICKLY MOVED INTO PUTTING UP A NEW BUILDING AND REVAMPING THE ENTIRE PREMISES. FOR THIS, CAST AND MASIBAMBISANE ARE DEEPLY ENDEBTED TO CONTAINER WORK, DEZZO ROOFING AND USIZONIKA DEVELOPMENT MANAGERS.
